County Champions, on the last day, in the last over

Wadebridge beat Callington by 11 runs on Saturday 9 September 2023 to win the ECB Cornwall Premier League, the club's first county title in 55 years.

Wadebridge players in whites and claret caps leap on each other in celebration, Snell number 5 in the middle of the pile.

It came down to the last day of the season, and then to the last over.

On Saturday 9 September 2023 the 1st XI went into the final round of the ECB Cornwall Premier League knowing a win at home to Callington would make them champions. Penzance, the defending champions, won their own game that afternoon, so nothing less than a Wadebridge victory would do.

The game

Wadebridge batted first and made 246 for 8. Opener Kevin Renecke scored 101, with Kelvin Snell making 58 and Matt Robins 30.

Callington went hard at it. Liam Lindsay made 79 and Aidan Libby 62, and with one over left they needed 14. Lindsay was the key wicket, and when it fell early in that final over the title was all but settled. Callington finished on 235 for 7. Wadebridge won by 11 runs, with Robins taking 3 for 26.

What it means

It was the club’s first county title in 55 years. The captain was James Turpin.

The 2nd XI made it a double on the same afternoon, beating Callington’s 2nd XI by 98 runs to win Division Two East and earn promotion to County Division 1 for the first time.

Thank you

To the players, the scorers, the tea makers, the people who rolled the square and put up the covers, and the big home crowd who stayed to the end: thank you.
